Beckett, who is replacing Frank Secret due to retirement, has served in the police department for 26 years, most recently as a lieutenant.
The oath was administered by Town Supervisor Peter Parsons, while Beckett's wife, Lori Ann, by his side.
Parsons, in discussing Beckett's record, noted that his employment file contains a “thick record of commendations, of thank yous from our citizens,” adding that it included stories "that we could make a mini movie from what he's got already.”
Secret, meanwhile, is not leaving the police force entirely. Beckett told Daily Voice about plans for him to be rehired as a part-time member, which would entail becoming John Jay High School's new school resource officer (SRO).
The night also included an oath of office for David Alfano, a town police officer who was elevated to sergeant. Parsons also administered Alfano's oath.
Alfano's mother, Nancy Cogswell, was by his side for the ceremony.
Video clips of the swearing-in ceremonies for Beckett and Alfano are attached to this story, along with photos from the night.
